Ultrasound-Guided Nerve Hydrodissection at Coastal Orthopedics in Brunswick, ME | Advanced Orthopedic Sports Medicine
Discover a minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided approach to nerve irritation and entrapment.
At Coastal Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, we offer ultrasound-guided nerve hydrodissection, a minimally invasive procedure designed to help relieve irritation around a nerve and restore normal nerve mobility.
Nerves can become irritated or compressed as they travel through muscles, connective tissue, and narrow anatomical spaces. This can contribute to pain, numbness, tingling, burning sensations, weakness, or symptoms that radiate into the arm or leg.
What Is Nerve Hydrodissection?
- Nerve hydrodissection uses real-time ultrasound guidance to precisely identify an irritated or entrapped nerve. A solution of fluid is then injected around the nerve to separate it from surrounding tissues that may be contributing to compression, irritation, or restricted movement.
- Depending on the condition being treated, the injectate may include saline, dextrose, local anesthetic, or other physician-selected solutions.
- Because ultrasound allows the physician to visualize the nerve and surrounding structures in real time, the procedure can be performed with a high degree of precision.
What Conditions Can Nerve Hydrodissection Treat?
Nerve hydrodissection may be considered for a variety of peripheral nerve conditions, including:
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome- Compression of the median nerve at the wrist can cause numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness in the hand.
- Cubital Tunnel Syndrome- Irritation of the ulnar nerve around the elbow can cause symptoms extending into the ring and small fingers.
- Radial Nerve Irritation- Entrapment or irritation of branches of the radial nerve can contribute to pain, altered sensation, or weakness in the forearm and hand.
- Peroneal Nerve Entrapment- Irritation of the peroneal nerve around the knee can cause pain, numbness, or weakness affecting the lower leg and foot.
- Meralgia Paresthetica- Compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve can cause burning, numbness, or hypersensitivity along the outer thigh.
- Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome- Compression of the tibial nerve near the ankle can produce pain, tingling, or numbness in the foot.
- Occipital Neuralgia- Compression of the occipital nerves that take their origin from the cervical spine and innervate the head can contribute to headache syndromes and are often amenable to ultrasound guided hydrodissection.
- Other Peripheral Nerve Entrapments
Hydrodissection may also be considered when nerves are irritated by surrounding muscles, fascia, scar tissue, or other soft-tissue structures.
Why Ultrasound Guidance Matters
Nerves are small structures surrounded by muscles, tendons, blood vessels, and other important anatomy. Ultrasound allows the physician to visualize these structures throughout the procedure. This enables targeted treatment of the tissue surrounding the affected nerve while helping avoid nearby structures.
A Minimally Invasive Approach
Nerve hydrodissection is performed through a small needle and results are realized immediately to within a few days.
For appropriately selected patients, it may provide an alternative or complement to traditional treatments such as activity modification, physical therapy, medications, or surgical decompression.

Who May Be a Candidate for Nerve Hydrodissection?
- Not every nerve-related condition requires hydrodissection, and the source of symptoms needs to be carefully evaluated before treatment.
- At Coastal Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, our physicians use a combination of clinical examination, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and diagnostic evaluation to determine whether nerve hydrodissection may be appropriate for an individual patient.
- If you're experiencing persistent numbness, tingling, burning, radiating pain, or symptoms consistent with a peripheral nerve problem, nerve hydrodissection may be an option worth discussing.
