Heal Faster, Naturally — Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy in Brunswick
Looking for a cutting-edge, non-surgical treatment to accelerate recovery from sports injuries? Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy may be the solution. At Coastal Ortho, our board-certified orthopedic specialists use PRP to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions — helping athletes and active individuals get back in the game faster.
What Is PRP Therapy?
- Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a regenerative treatment that uses a patient’s own blood to stimulate healing. After drawing a small amount of blood, we process it in a centrifuge to concentrate platelets, growth factors, and proteins that promote tissue repair. The PRP is then carefully injected into the injured area (patient’s joint, ligament, tendon, etc) to support the body’s natural healing process.
- PRP was first used in medicine over 30 years ago. Over the past 10-15 years there has been mounting evidence of its effectiveness in certain musculoskeletal conditions.
- PRP is used to promote healing and symptomatic improvement in painful joints, ligaments, and tendons.
- PRP can be considered in healthy individuals who have failed to improve from other conservative treatments such as over the counter medications, rest, corticosteroid injections, and/or physical therapy.

What to Expect During PRP Treatment
1. Consultation: Your orthopedic doctor evaluates your injury and determines if PRP is appropriate.
- This may include an exam and/or review of any relevant prior imaging or records.
- An additional diagnostic ultrasound may be performed to help with procedural planning.
- You will be required to stop any NSAID medications (Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Voltaren, etc) at least 10 days before prior to the procedure. There is a potential that NSAID medication use may inhibit some of the growth factors present in PRP.
2. Procedure: A small blood sample is drawn and processed to isolate platelet-rich plasma.
- The blood sample is placed into a centrifuge which helps separate and concentrate the different components of your blood (red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, plasma, etc).
3. Injection: PRP is performed as an in-office procedure.
- The PRP is injected into the injured area, under ultrasound guidance.
4. Recovery: You may experience mild soreness for a few days. Full benefits typically appear within a few weeks.
- PRP therapy is an outpatient treatment, and you will be able to go home after the procedure.
- After PRP procedures, you may be required to have a reduced level of activity. This is normally at least 1-2 days but may be longer depending on the specific procedure type.
- You may experience mild pain for a few days post treatment. This can usually be controlled with over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol. Icing can also be helpful if Tylenol alone is not effective. There is however a subset of patients, approximately 10-20%, that may have a “flare” of more significant pain post procedure. This typically lasts 24-48rs and can be treated with the same OTC/conservative options.
- You will be required to hold any NSAID medications for 14 days post procedure for the same reasoning as noted above.
- It is expected to take up to 6-12wks post procedure to accurately assess your response to therapy.
Is PRP Covered by Insurance?
